What Omegle was, and why it closed
Omegle launched on 25 March 2009 and paired strangers at random for text or video chat. For a lot of people it was the first place they ever spoke to a stranger from another country.
On 8 November 2023 its founder, Leif K-Brooks, shut it down permanently after 14 years. In his farewell letter he pointed to misuse of the site, the cost and stress of fighting that misuse, and a lawsuit brought by a user who had been abused as a child. NPR, NBC News and Wikipedia all covered the closure. Today omegle.com shows only that letter.
Omegle clones: the name lives on, the site does not
Search for Omegle now and you will find sites with names like omegleweb or omegleapp. They are unrelated to the original and to each other — the Omegle name is simply a magnet for search traffic. Some are harmless roulette sites, some are thin pages covered in ads, and you rarely know who runs them.
